BCCG Web Conference:
Demythologising crypto-assets Bitcoin or Bitcon : the path to a cashless society?
The astronomical price rise of Bitcoin and other crypto currencies is occupying widespread public attention. Many ordinary people with spare cash are wondering whether to buy these instruments in view of low or negative yields on savings deposits and worries about increasing inflation.
In a virtual debate organised by the British Chamber of Commerce in Germany, Phil Middleton, London-based chairman of the OMFIF Digital Monetary Institute, a seasoned expert on central banking, financial markets and payments system, leads a discussion on the growth of crypto assets and their uses and possible dangers for savers, banks and governments. He discusses their role in a potential path to a cashless society, which can include central bank digital currencies as well as private assets such as the Diem blockchain-backed payment system. The talk will dwell on the advantages and limitations of crypto assets as a means of payment and store of value, and discuss how central banks and regulators are adapting to their growing popularity.
This is a virtual event in English for a widespread audience of people – specialists and non-specialists - interested in economics and finance across Germany, the UK and many other countries including the US.
