British Embassy Berlin - Vacancy

Economic and Social Policy Officer, Berlin (DEU18.253a)
Application deadline: 13 June 2018

The British Embassy in Germany is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an Economic and Social Policy Officer (B3L) (m/f) based in Berlin.

The successful applicant will become part of the British Government’s presence in Germany, supporting their work. Germany is the UK’s main economic partner in Europe and the bilateral relationship with Germany will continue to be one of the most important. The Embassy supports this relationship by providing high quality advice on economic and social policy developments in Germany; by identifying and explaining German interests in preparation for bilateral and multilateral meetings; and by lobbying in favour of UK interests. The jobholder will contribute to this work, in particular by providing expert advice on economic and social policy, including labour market, migration, social cohesion, mobility, health care policy and making globalisation work for all.

Although the job holder will be required to take on other tasks and roles as required, the main responsibilities of the position are as follows: the jobholder will be required to build and maintain a wide network of relevant contacts across Germany, attend events and provide reports and analysis to colleagues in Berlin, Brussels and London. The essential objective will be to provide reporting insight which goes beyond what is available from a simple news reporting service and can explain and predict events based on knowledge of the broader economic and political issues involved. Key policy areas are likely to include developments in German benefits systems, labour market developments, and employment policy, as well as policies relating to wider social developments, inequality, demographic change, globalisation, gender and health care. The role holder should further proactively suggest areas where the UK and Germany could benefit from working together and take these forward, if seen by senior management as in the UK’s interest. The incumbent will report to one of the Joint Heads of the Future Relationship Team and will need to have a collegiate approach to joint working as this role has significant synergies with others working across the Embassy. The job holder will also be called on to provide occasional specialist advice on relevant issues to others in the Germany network.

Only applications sent through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Local Staff Vacancies webpage will be considered.
