Our setting

  • DBT Germany is part of the Department for Business and Trade and consists of around 40 staff based at the Embassy in Berlin and the Consulates-General in DĂĽsseldorf and Munich.
  • Based both within the Technology and the Future Mobility Teams, your work will focus on supporting innovative companies across the spectrum of future technologies – from AI and quantum computing to space and aerospace. These UK industries have a long and proud history and are in a period of radical transformation driven by new emerging technology and the aim to reach our climate goals.
  • As Trade Advisor your work will not only help to shape this transformation but also to achieve it. You will be crucial to driving forward projects and you will quickly find there is no such thing as a typical day. Your time will be split between collaborating with teams in the office to deliver sector priorities, meeting and account managing business and represent the UK at trade events, while also delivering reports and briefings. You will also form a critical part of the wider Germany network and will be expected to contribute to the building of a single team across our three geographical locations in Germany. Travel to the UK to progress the most critical and strategic priorities, working with the wider UK Government, is also a possibility.

Your roles and responsibilities:

  • You will work across the Technology and Mobility Teams to foster the UK-German trade relationship.
  • You will proactively engage, and account manage key UK and German companies as well as internal/external stakeholders to boost UK exports to Germany.
  • You will gather business intelligence and conduct market research in the relevant fields.
  • You will provide support in delivering business events, VIP and Ministerial visits to prepare seniors and Ministers for engagements in the German market.
  • The jobholder is also expected to contribute to wider work of the Consulate General through corporate activity, including crisis work.

Our ideal candidate shows:

  • Excellent oral and written English and German (to at least level C1 CEFR).
  • A demonstrable interest in the fields of Technology and Future Mobility and related trade and policy matters – expertise not required, but an enquiring mind is.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in working with modern office tools such as PowerPoint, Excel, Work, CRM.
  • Knowledge of the German and UK business environment.
  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and experience leading projects, particularly around events.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and excels working as part of a team.
  • Self-starter and ability to work well on own initiative.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and discretion when representing the British Government.
  • Agility and be able to think creatively.
