Who are we?

The British Embassy in Berlin is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and is now looking for a Communications Officer.

This role in the British Embassy’s Public Diplomacy and Internal Politics team sits at the heart of the UK’s diplomatic network in Germany and is an opportunity to contribute significantly across a wide variety of high-profile issues, from UK ministerial visits to the Munich Security Conference to Embassy participation in the Christopher Street Day Parade.

We aim to be a diverse and inclusive employer, welcoming to people of all backgrounds. The senior leadership is committed to ensuring that we are a supportive and fair place to work. The Germany Network values are kindness, inclusivity, honesty, professionalism and responsibility. These values guide how we work on a daily basis, and all staff must adhere to them.

Main purpose of job:

You will help strengthen the UK’s presence and voice in Germany through creative, impactful communications and public diplomacy. The jobholder will plan, design and deliver engaging content for the British Embassy and Consulates, helping shape how key UK priorities — from ministerial visits to support for Ukraine and UK cultural strengths — are understood by German audiences. Working across the Embassy’s social media channels and traditional media engagement, the role turns complex policy issues into compelling stories that resonate online and in person.
Beyond communications, the role supports wider public diplomacy efforts that deepen UK–Germany relationships. This includes helping design campaigns, supporting cultural and educational initiatives, engaging stakeholders, and contributing to events such as film screenings, roundtables and high-profile visits. The jobholder will work collaboratively with colleagues across the Embassy to develop outreach that builds networks, showcases UK expertise and values, and enhances the UK’s reputation within German society.
As part of an experienced and supportive team, the role offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact diplomatic work while developing strong professional skills in a dynamic international environment.

Roles and responsibilities:

Following last year’s signing of the Kensington Treaty, we want German audiences to see the benefits of a close ‘Freundship’ with the UK, be it in defending our shared values globally, innovating to tackle climate change, or simply enjoying Britain’s distinctive national cultures. We also need to use comms to share important information with British nationals and businesses, including around travel to and from Germany and major sporting events or the Oktoberfest.

In this role, you will contribute by taking on the following:

Communications:

  • Implementing Embassy digital communications as part of the Embassy’s wider communications strategy, based on Embassy goals in Germany and the British Government’s wider work around the world;
  • Coordinating weekly social media activity, ensuring a steady drumbeat of content for all channels across each of our campaigns;
  • Write copy in German and English, working alongside other officers to create engaging digital output (graphics, photos, videos). Designing and running the digital aspects of Embassy’s campaigns;
  • Managing our social media channels, identifying effective ways to encourage engagement from the channel community and advising the wider team on content for that channel accordingly;
  • Building the Embassy’s digital audience and improving positive engagement and the Embassy’s digital influence;
  • Monitoring and evaluating the impact of our social media content. Identifying influential partners on social media with whom we might interact on particular campaigns;
  • Supporting the team’s wider work, including media handling and wider organisation of larger events;
  • You may also need to contribute to the Embassy’s Public Comms during a crisis;
  • Sharing the account management of partner sections around the Embassy to identify and plan their specific comms needs;

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Maintaining and developing relationships with key stakeholders, including journalists, influencers, civil society, youth groups, and cultural institutions—to support both communications and broader public diplomacy goals.

Public Diplomacy and Outreach:

  • Contributing to the planning and delivery of wider public diplomacy activity, including outreach programmes, thematic campaigns, youth and civil society engagement, cultural diplomacy, or educational initiatives;
  • Supporting colleagues to identify opportunities for UK–Germany cooperation and outreach, ensuring our PD activities reach priority audiences;
  • Assisting in organising or delivering Embassy events that advance UK soft power or strengthen key networks beyond the communications sphere.

Additionally, you will also:

  • Participate actively in our corporate agenda, helping to build an inclusive and developmental culture within the team and wider Network.

As the role evolves, the jobholder may take on additional public diplomacy responsibilities and support new strands of PD work as UK–Germany priorities develop.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:

  • Proficiency in English and German (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level of the CEFR framework – you will need to be able to draft texts for publication on social media without grammatical or stylistic errors);
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in content creation for social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X);
  • A completed degree at a bachelor’s/undergraduate level (preferably in fields related to Communications or Social Sciences/Humanities);
  • Good MS Office Skills;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • The ability to work effectively and flexibly in a team;
