With over 3.5 million inhabitants, Berlin is Germany’s capital and its largest city with a growing population. Berlin is also a young city: over half of the population is under forty. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, Berlin has become one of the most dynamic business locations in Europe. Since 2014, Berlin saw an annual growth of its GDP, peaking in the year 2016 with a growth rate of 5.1%. In 2019, Berlin’s GDP increased by 3.0%, the highest GDP growth rate among all 16 German states.

Brandenburg will soon boast one of the best infrastructure networks in the world. New six-lane highways, high-speed inter-city railway links, the new international Berlin/Brandenburg airport and improved waterways have been built and are being completed.

ATTRACTIVENESS The city is an attractive site for new high-tech enterprises in medical technology, software, new media, laser technology, bioengineering and genetic engineering. High-growth companies include BMW, Daimler, Siemens, Zalando, IBM, PSI, Deutsche Telekom. In the heart of the new Berlin is Deutsche Bahn AG with its Head Quarter. EXPERTISE Berlin is Germany's biggest university city. Many of the more than 190,000 students undergoing education in Berlin want to stay in the capital, with the result that Berlin has a large and well qualified labor force. Of these students around 10% are studying IT or new media. BRANDENBURG Brandenburg will soon boast one of the best infrastructure networks in the world. HIGH-TECH The high-tech sectors actively promoted in the region are communications and the media industry, chemicals, biotechnology, electrical engineering and environmental technology. Brandenburg is also establishing itself as a center of Germany’s technology-driven automotive industry headed by Tesla’s upcoming Gigafactory. CONNECTIVENESS Taking Berlin and Brandenburg together, the concentration of research and scientific capacity to be found in the region includes six universities, 21 colleges and more than 300 research institutes. With its strong-growing economy the German Capital Region is one of Europe’s most exciting hubs. Its central position in the continent ensures that all the growing markets in Europe are only a one-day truck drive away.
